Interview with Brent, President of 1am Doll USA

Adult novelties have become increasingly popular for both personal use and that by couples, but none of the sex toys out there are more intricate, elaborate and expensive than your own, personalized love doll. I recently chatted with Brent from 1am Doll USA about how their love dolls are made, what makes them popular and the future of sex dolls as part of the ever-expanding pleasure products market.

C.J. Asher – First of all, Brent, thank you for this interview! Tell us a little about yourself…

Brent – My name is Brent, I am from St. Louis, Missouri, and I have a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering.

C.J. Asher – Tell us about the 1amUSA, the types of love dolls you sell, the company’s history, and so forth.

Brent – 1am Doll USA is a leading manufacturer and distributor of quality affordable Love Dolls. The China branch of 1am Dolls was founded in 2002 and the USA branch was opened in 2012. We sell everything from high-end inflatable to realistic silicone and TPE Love Dolls. We have a doll that will fit not only our customers’ needs, but also their budget.

C.J. Asher – What is your title and role with the company?

Brent – I am the President of the USA branch and my Mechanical Engineering background allows me to have input on design and product improvement.

C.J. Asher – What first made you decide to work in the adult novelty industry, specifically in love dolls?

Brent – In the late 90’s and early 2000’s, I owned a computer company that would travel and do trade shows throughout the United States. Obviously, we would sell large quantities of components, most of which were made in China, so I was able to connect to a broker to purchase large quantities of components directly from China. My wife and I decided to start a family and, being self-employed, I did not have insurance, so I decided to sell the computer company and go back to the work force as an engineer.  My engineering income was able to cover child care for one kid, but my wife and I wanted another kid, so I had a choice to find a second job or an alternative. My alternative idea was to reach out to my import broker and see if there was something small I could sell on eBay or online to make some extra cash. That is when the broker asked if I had an “open mind” and showed me the product they wanted me to sell. I soon asked my wife’s permission to sell Love Dolls and, with her blessing, I was off to the races. In fact, I am again self-employed because the company was growing at such a fast pace my income from selling Love Dolls was exceeding my engineering salary.

C.J. Asher – What’s your best-selling doll, and what makes it so popular?

Brent – Katie is our top selling doll. The amount of options, weight, height, and curves make this doll very appealing to most of our customers.

C.J. Asher – Do any of your dolls have backstories or companion materials?

Brent – No, we do not give our dolls an identity beyond the name. Our data shows our customers usually change the name and create there own identity. When you select over twenty five different faces, four different eye colors, five different skin tones, etc., the customer is really in control of making the doll be everything they fantasize about. That is why our slogan is “Fantasies Start @ 1am.”

C.J. Asher – What adult stars do you have models of?

Brent – In 2016, we introduced our Signature Starlet of dolls of Adult Film stars. Our first doll Starlet was Misty Stone and at the 2017 AVN Expo we unveiled the new Luna Star doll. We plan on making about twp Starlets a year and have contracts out to several ladies in the industry, so our next release will be late summer.

C.J. Asher – Do you make customized dolls?

Brent – With over twenty bodies and all the options available, customers have the flexibility to design the doll how they see fit. We do get emails from customers requesting tweaks to a certain body, but being the doll is made from a mold, we cannot change the shape or size. Making a mold for a one-time run is very costly, so most customers would not pay for a custom doll.

C.J. Asher – Who is your typical client base?

Brent – We would not say we have a client base as we seem to touch a little of every demographic. We get the jokes that our dolls are for: “nerds that live in their parent’s basement,” but we believe that is far from the truth.

C.J. Asher – How do you feel that love dolls help singles and couples to enhance their sexual activity and their relationships?

Brent – For single men, it is all about confidence and our product gives them a realistic sexual appearance to build confidence and stamina. For couples, it is the safest three-way they could ever have or is a great companion to experiment with the swinging lifestyle.

C.J. Asher – What sets your company apart from other love doll companies in the adult novelty market?

Brent – 1am Doll USA is known for providing quality products at affordable products, but what most of our customers would say sets us apart is our top-notch customer service. The adult novelty market is not black and white; there are a lot of shady companies out there and the Love Doll marketplace contains a lot of scams where customers never receive the product they ordered or what they receive is a cheap blow-up doll that looks nothing like the pictures. We always tell customers if the deal is too good to be true, it probably is, if you are in the market for any adult novelty product, use a reputable vendor in the industry with a proven track record.

C.J. Asher – What are your favorite industry-related events?

Brent – AVN and EXXXOTICA are our favorite events. Basically, by participating in both companies trade shows, we will go coast-to-coast each year. Being an online company are biggest request is wanting to see or touch a doll in person and participating in these shows gives our customers this opportunity.

C.J. Asher – What new and exciting products do you have coming out in the near future?

Brent – We will have another Signature Starlet coming out this year and we are working with some other adult talents on making smaller novelty items.

C.J. Asher – There’s talk about everyone having sex with robots in the future. Do you see potentially teaming up with a robotics company to make this vision a reality?

Brent – I think in my lifetime we will see robotics and AI in Love Dolls.

C.J. Asher – Tell us some of the compliments you’ve received from your customers.

Brent – We receive many compliments from satisfied customers, but some of my favorites are those men that admittedly lacked confidence to even talk to a woman and after using our product finally gained the confidence to not only socialize, but move into a healthy relationship. To me, our product making a difference in somebody’s life is amazing.

C.J. Asher – What nominations and awards have you received?

Brent – The Signature Starlet line was nominated in 2017 by XBIZ, for “Specialty Line Product of the Year” and the Misty Stone Love Doll was nominated by AVN for “Most Amazing Sex Toy.”
