‘Mental Viagra’ Injections Could Boost Male Sex Drive, Cure Erectile Dysfunction

Long Story Short

A study at Imperial College London has suggested that a shot of the hormone kisspeptin could kickstart male libido, making it a "Mental Viagra".

Long Story

They would certainly never tell you, however drunk they get, but many men suffer from sexual problems. In Singapore, doctors have seen a rising number of ED patients, even among those who are in their 20s and 30s.

A report by TODAY noted that Professor Peter Lim, senior consultant urologist at the Andrology, Urology and Continence Centre at Gleneagles Hospital, Singapore, has seen about 15 to 20 young ED patients who are in their 20s and 30s monthly — a figure that has more than doubled in the last decade.

That’s a pretty big number of guys suffering largely in silence with a condition that ruins their quality of life.

But help may be at hand through a hormone injection being dubbed ‘Mental Viagra’ after tests at London’s Imperial College.

Kisspeptin is the hormone which sets off puberty and is also found in chocolate. Scientists believe a kisspeptin boost may be enough to light the fireworks in the bedroom again.

It was found in the mid-1990s in Hershey, Pennsylvania, and was named after the candy Hershey’s Kisses. As well as encouraging romance, it is also believed to play a part in fuelling the production of testosterone – the good old erection hormone.

In a pioneering study, when 29 healthy men were injected with kisspeptin, brain scans showed increased activity in the part of the brain which deals with sexual desire and romance when they saw pictures of couples in sexual and non-sexual situations.

Men who were given a placebo didn’t register the same effect, even when looking at some scientifically approved soft porn.

Professor Waljit Dhillo of Imperial College London told the Daily Mail:

“Our initial findings are novel and exciting as they indicate that kisspeptin plays a role in simulating some of the emotions and responses that lead to sex and reproduction.

“Ultimately, we are keen to look into whether kisspeptin could be an effective treatment for psychosexual disorders and potentially help countless couples who are struggling to conceive.”

While a lot more research is needed, the possibility of a ‘Mental Viagra’ will bring hope to many men who have started to dread bedtime – it could be the long-awaited kiss of life for their sex lives.

Should more attention be paid to men with low sex drives?

Drop This Fact

According to consultant clinical andrologist Dr Mohd Ismail Mohd Tambi,ED may affect as many as 3 million Malaysians, a number that was extrapolated from medical research carried out in 1996, which found that 600,000 men above the age of 40 had complete ED.
